Now that the cat has been let out of the bag, companies like Google, Microsoft , and Apple, have been put in a very tight spot, since this sort of thing undermines consumer confidence in their ability and willingness to protect the confidentiality of data that people have entrusted to their servers. This is not only a problem for them in the US but this could hurt them in overseas markets too, if people there are going to assume that all their data may be compromised by US intelligence agencies.
