There is one point that you miss, Charles.  Republicans are not
against government spending in general, they are against government
spending on social programs and public services.  But they are
perfectly ok with big government spending that subsidizes business -
bailouts, defense contracts, public-private "partnerships" and the
like.  This is quite evident in the current republican budget proposal
- cut social spending, restore military spending.
