Angelus: "Contemporary fascism is essentially a proletarian phenomenon."

[WS] Contemporary fascism is essentially an elephant http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blind_men_and_an_elephant. Or a Rorschach blot if you will.

It is a complex social phenomenon that has a strong populist - hence proletarian - tenor, the meat of it if you will, but it also has a lot of other ingredients and spices that make the character of the dish. The marriage of industrialists and landowners that supported and bankrolled it. The ex-military and paramilitary groups that provided the organizational form. The nationalist identities that provided ideological flavor. The protectionist national economies that fueled these nationalist ideologies. The economic downturn that pulled the rug from underneath the working class. The proletarians provided mainly the cannon fodder - or the "cannon meat" as they say in the old country - but the cooking, the flavoring, and the style of presentation came definitely from the upper classes and the military.
