That same "things are different now" argument can be used to make damaging inroads against all the other civil rights, which is why that argument should never be accepted as valid.

I was once, and would again be, for the unrestricted right to gun ownership

This will never happen while 2/3's of the populace support the second amendment but anti-gun liberals are allowed to speak for the left on the gun rights issue.
