Carrol's note on Mathiessen and the attack on radicals before McCarthy reminded me that Mathiessen gave nearly $15,000 to Paul Sweezy to help launch Monthly Review, which began publishing 11 months before Mathiessen's suicide. Also, May Sarton's fine novel, Faithful Are the Wounds, is based upon Mathiessen's life and death.
