Let's face it, we already had one civil war, in part because the political system that the Framers gave us could not resolve the disputes centering around the issue of slavery. One might have thought that in the post-Civil War period an effort might have been made to overhaul the political system. But that never happened. Perhaps, if Lincoln had not been assassinated, maybe he would have attempted to address this problem, or perhaps not.
