It's not pretending. They can! (We are not talking about peasant remnants in a capitalist world. And incidentally, peasants existed in the world before anyone had iron.
And artisans in a peasant world are not alienated labor either. They may sell their products; they may have to produce products for a local lord, but they do NOT provide abstract labor.
