The GOP 'strategy' (and it obviously works) is to create an imagined enemy (usually the underprivileged, but sometimes some guy in Iraq), and fire up their base into a frenzy of hate.
Hate so vile that they can't even see that "the enemy" is often themselves.
The GOP is so good at this game that in 2012 they convinced 45% of voters to vote against their own best self interests!
So it's probably worth asking 'what are the GOP distracting their low thinking base from'?
They're trying to hide the fact that they work only for the upper 2%.
They've worked diligently these past 30 years, using their power and influence to change the rules of the game.
They've been paid to cut taxes for the wealthy. They've changed trade laws so that corporations can move their manufacturing facilities off shore, to use child labor, without environmental or safety rules, to import their goods back here.
They've been paid to change finance rules, allowing the swindlers to use stock market gambling tools that were outlawed after the great depression, and the repeal of those rules led directly to THIS depression.
They've given billions to Wall Street to cover the losses, billions given as bonuses, rewards for having successfully duped the public once again.
Their antics so crippled the economy that even more jobs were lost, housing values crumbled and retirement funds tanked; all of which contributed to widening the gap between the haves and have nots even more.
Now, we know that life isn't always fair, but when we sat down at this card table, we assumed we'd have an even chance at winning the game. When people finally wake up and discover that the folks that invited us to participate in this game had kept all the face cards to themselves, well, you maybe then we can get a new DC?
You are correct. There is a LARGE & HATEFUL divide in this country.

Every day, ALL DAY LONG, Fox News Contributors regularly spew Hate Speech against Democrats and Liberals, calling them "Appeasers" of Terrorism, "Anti-American", "Socialist", "Marxist", "Fascist", "Communist", "Kooks" and "Traitors" - simply because they believe that Government has a responsibility to protect the public not only from the threats of war and terrorism, but also the threats of disease, unfair discrimination, unsafe consumer products and corporate exploitation.
All you have to do is look at the "Manifesto" of one Violent Fox News Fan, James Adkisson, who killed two and injured three others in the Unitarian Church in Knoxville TN.

Oh, and while I'm on subject of Fox...
Numerous studies have been done that show that folks that get most (or all) of their news from Fox actually know LESS about current events than folks that don't watch cable news at all!!
I mean, how can that possibly happen??!
Either Fox news purposely mis-leads, twists and lies, or Fox News viewers are dumber than rocks...and I would never call somebody dumb...
