Assad is a brutal thug who imposed neoliberal economic policies on Syria during the 2000s, and who is also a mass murderer, whose Air Force has dropped thousands of barrel bombs (completely inaccurate terror weapons) on protesting civilians in Aleppo, Damascus and other cities. Assad's thugs also used sarin-based chemical weapons on East Ghouta last year, murdering 1,000 civilians. His Alawite minority regime is waging a criminal sectarian war against Syria's Sunni majority, a war the Alawites are slowly but surely losing.
The thugs of the ISIS (the Daesh) are a medieval horror, of course - essentially a Sunni theo-fascist movement, the Sunni remix of Assad's nightmarish rule. But the rebels are not all ISIS - parts of the FSA in Deraa and Idlib are secular and sane, and the Kurds in northeast Syria are secular.
