Know you're half kidding with that etymology, and I don't disagree with the
sentiment. But *entreprise *(the activity of an entrepreneur) is actually
equivalent to *undertaking* in English (*Unternehmen* in German). Whether
you read *entrepreneur* as meaning one who *takes* (something) *under*
[his/her charge/care/control] or one who *takes* (a position) *under* [the
responsibility for something], the activity can be construed, in general
terms at least, as a positive one. The problem for us is to explain what's
wrong with someone taking charge of or responsibility for something.
