Dear List Members
I am new to this list since the Science for the People meeting in Amherst (which I enjoyed very much).
Members may want to know about our Independent Science News (www.independentsciencenews.org) website, which is a publication of our non-profit, the Bioscience Resource Project (BSR is at www.bioscienceresource.org).
We are primarily interested in biology: food, agriculture and genetics as they relate to health, the environment, science, and society. Of the two websites, Independent Science News publishes original articles (by ourselves or guest writers), who are usually working scientists (so please send us ideas or copy for consideration). The front page also carries carefully selected links to the best public interest science stories (on related topics) from around the web. The BSR home website is more technical and resource-oriented. Its newest resource page is about genetic determinism, e.g. flaws in twin studies, the failure of GWA studies, and the politics of genetics. Like the other resource pages we host, It is a vehicle for new and classic papers to help people unfamiliar with the subject become interested and/or get up to speed (http://www.bioscienceresource.org/resources/human-genetic-predisposition/).
Judging from the Amherst meeting Science for the People and Bioscience Resource Project have substantially overlapping philosophies and less so methodologies. The readership of ISN is about 15,000 individual visitors per month. This readership is entirely built on word of mouth. If you like the site, SftP readers can do us a huge favour by sharing ISN articles with colleagues and friends and listserves. If every member of this list shared it with 25 people and they shared it with 25 people Independent Science News would still not have quite as many readers as the New York Times, but we would have made up some considerable part of the difference! By such methods we intend to bootstrap our way to the top and hopefully SftP affilliates will agree that would be a very good thing. We can make and present powerful content but we cannot distribute it ourselves without help.
We also encourage readers to explore and share older articles. Like those of the Science for the People magazine, the stories remain true, relevant and best-in-class, unlike the faddist irrelevance that characterises most science writing today.
Subscriptions (free) to ISN articles can be obtained on either website. Articles appear approximately once per month, depending.
best wishes and thanks for your attention Jonathan Latham
