[lbo-talk] Malala's Trotskyist sympathies

17 year olds get a free patronizing pass for their socialist sympathies - “they’ll grow out of it”. In truth, I suspect maybe one in every 10000 who are drawn to these small socialist groups as members or sympathizers don’t stick around for very long, though I haven’t done a scientific survey. They drift away because these groups stagnate and acquire many of the characteristics of sects, which soon becomes apparent. If there were a growing mass socialist movement embedded in the neighbourhoods and workplaces, it would be a different story. But these days the security services and the elites, including those represented in the Nobel committee, are less alarmed by the radical left than by political Islamists with the potential to wreak havoc. Hard to believe the Nobel committee didn’t know about Malala’s political sympathies, but I expect they just decided to overlook that little inconvenient fact and omit it from the press release.

She’s a socialist and identifies with the radical wing of the movement. Or at least she did as recently as last year. In March, 2013, she sent the following message of solidarity to the Pakistani section of the International Marxist Tendency which described her as a “sympathizer” who had spoken at one of their summer schools the previous year.
