Italy's largest labour federation estimates one million people demonstrated in Rome today against anti-union legislation introduced by the social democratic Renzi government. So-called labour reforms designed to weaken historic protections won by unions against arbitrary employer action and to drive down labour costs are at the heart of austerity policies pursued by all European governments. They have run into stiff resistance from unions and their supporters in Greece, Spain, Italy, France and other countries with a long tradition of trade union militancy.
