Reuters reports below on the PKK’s effort to mobilize young Turkish Kurds join in the defence of their compatriots in the Syrian border town of Kobani.

The town is the latest to be threatened by Islamic State forces who have brutally advanced against Kurdish communities in Syria. An estimated 70,000 residents of Kobani have fled across the border into Turkey.

The Kurdish communities are being defended against the the better-equpped IS by the People's Protection Units (YPG), in which young women play a prominent role. The units are the armed wing of the left-wing Kurdish Democratic Union party (YPD), the Syrian offshoot of the better known PKK (Kurdistan Workers Party) in Turkey led by Abdullan Ocalan.
