I agree. While there is no linear causality involved, the creation of a U.S. left is inseparable from a number of battles over U.S. history. That is one reason the "merely symbolic" demand that Princeton be cleansed of Wilsonian memorials is rather more than a "merely symbolic" demand. I forget what the immediate trigger was the last time I unsubbed from the Marxism list, but the reason I never considered going back was a matter of history -- the detestable habit of referring to the Panthers as "ultra-left." Building an actual left in the United States requires, among other things, a firm grasp of the best of left history -- and that means understanding just what the Panthers represented and were.
