In writing to his children (as I recall) Marx mentioned that he took as his motto a line from the Roman playwright Terence (Publius Terentius Afer, 195–159 BC) - from his comic play Heauton timorumenos ("The Self-Tormentor”): Homo sum: humani nihil a me alienum puto ("I am human, I consider nothing human alien to me”). —CGE
