From Geoffrey Garfield : Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.'s father, Adam, Sr., was the product of a mulatto (biracial) free woman and possibly a prominent white slave owner (she never revealed the identity of his father to Adam, Sr). Sr. then married a mulatto woman and they had Blanche (who passed for white) and Adam, Jr. So, Congressman Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. is probably at a minimum only 1/8 black if at all.
