Richard Haass, a central figure in the US defence and foreign policy establishment, effectively endorses Russian intervention in Syria. 

Haass says the US and Russia have a shared interest in checking the rise of the Islamic State, followed by a negotiated settlement "which would ease Assad out of power and establish a successor government that, at a minimum, enjoyed the support of his Alawite base and, ideally, some Sunnis."
