Despite appearances, Donald Trump’s supporters are not more economically deprived or less educated than other American wage and salary earners and small propertyholders. Their defining characteristic is xenophobic racism, delicately described in an extensive Gallup survey as a tendency to “be the most skeptical about immigration”

“Among those who are similar in terms of income, education and other factors, those who view Trump favorably are more likely to be found in white enclaves — racially isolated Zip codes where the amount of diversity is lower than in surrounding areas”, the survey concludes.
