Michael Klare cites the latest US government forecast of energy trends as further evidence that rapid technological developments in solar, wind, and other forms of green energy won't be enough to head off catastrophic climate change.

Global energy consumption, especially in China, India, and other developing countries is rising sharply, and though fossil fuels will continue to decline relative to renewables over the next couple of decades, they "will still have a grip on a staggering 78% of the world energy market...oil, coal, and natural gas will each still command larger shares of the market than all renewables combined."

This grim outcome is avoidable, as Klare notes, only if the latest technological and price breakthroughs are accompanied by political action which breaks the power of the fossil fuel industry and introduces green energy on a far larger scale than contemplated by the Paris agreements,
