I wonder if she knew a cousin of my father, Bill Gandall. A New York resident, he was unknown to me until a chance visit to Montreal when he saw a letter to the local paper which I had just written as a very young man in defence of the Cuban Revolution. He contacted me, we became friendly, and I would regularly drop in to see him when he was in NYC in the late 60’s and early 70’s. Before he went to Spain with the Lincoln brigade, he helped organize the NYC taxi drivers union and, before that, he was with the US Marines who invaded Nicaragua to stop Sandino - the experience which radicalized him. I later saw a Mother Jones photo him in a Veterans of the ALB delegation which went to Nicaragua to demonstrate their solidarity with the Sandinista revolution. As this LA Times story illustrates, he was a feisty old radical till the end:
