While Clinton was favoured over Trump, Bernie Sanders had the highest approval ratings of any politician; 45% would consider voting for a third party; more of those polled identified themselves as “conservative” than “liberal”; the overwhelming majority of respondents live in suburbs, small towns, and rural areas rather than the more heterogenous cities.
A cautionary note for Sanders’ supporters, however: A sizeable majority said “what a candidate did or said years ago was important” in making their choice. Sanders’ past support for the Sandinistas and other radical causes has not come under sustained attack as it would in the highly unlikely event he were to run for President, either as an independent or as the Democratic nominee.
