The fear and loathing of Trump that has gripped the U.S. for months has now brought millions of people into the streets (and airports), determined to stop his anti-human agenda. Our new editorial on the unprecedented, world-wide Jan. 21 Women’s Marches, “Gigantic Resistance Emerging Against Trumpism begins to make America GREAT again<http://marxisthumanistinitiative.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3bfae7928775a996aaff05fe6&id=9f197094cc&e=688276dc99>,” discusses the meaning of the spontaneous marches in some 643 different locations in the U.S.-- between 3.3 and 4.9 million protesters, and in 211 cities outside the U.S.—making the total participating between 3.5 and 5.2 million people. A few excerpts from the editorial follow:
The demonstrations opposed not just one facet of Trumpism; they opposed it in its totality. They were also a stinging repudiation of self-styled leftists who have been pro-Trump, soft-on-Trump, and “understanding of” Trumpism. Such people are moving in one direction; the masses of people on the cutting edge of this moment’s singularly important freedom struggle have now moved in the opposite direction. …

Objective threats and the elemental desire for freedom and dignity accomplished what decades of elitist liberal and left program-hatching, “raising consciousness,” strategizing, and economistic appeals have failed to do. The threats and the desire for freedom have created the start of a truly mass movement, spontaneously and suddenly. …

Marxist-Humanist Initiative is very happy to be witness to and part of this mass mobilization against Trump, which we called for back in August [see our editorial, The Extraordinary Dangers of Trump and Trumpism<http://marxisthumanistinitiative.us6.list-manage.com/track/click?u=3bfae7928775a996aaff05fe6&id=5e843961b8&e=688276dc99>], as it starts to become a reality. It is only a start, and we cannot predict what may develop out of one weekend’s events ….

The emerging movement is a movement of resistance, the desire to negate Trumpism. “The positive,” what the movement is for, may be able to develop over time–if the “vanguards” and leaders and program-mongers, of the Democratic Party and of “the left,” are deprived of opportunities to stifle its spontaneous forward movement. It is crucial that the movement be given the breathing space it needs in order to self-develop and move forward.
Just as demonstrations began before the inauguration, they have continued unabated since last weekend’s Women’s Marches. Trump’s vicious, blatantly unconstitutional “Muslim ban,” issued by Executive Order on Friday, shuts off entry into the U.S. by all refugees and anyone coming from seven predominately Muslim countries. It immediately brought out demonstrators who shut down parts of Kennedy Airport in New York yesterday, until a judge issued a restraining order against deportation of the newly-arrived people. Just as spontaneously and instantaneously as the airport protest began, it spread across the country and overseas to many major airports.
