The world’s largest lithium-ion battery, backing up a major power system in Australia, “appears to be far exceeding expectations”, according to a report in the Washington Post.

The Post described the Hornsdale Power Reserve as “the biggest proof-of-concept yet that batteries such as Tesla’s can help mitigate one of renewable energy’s most persistent problems: how to use it when the sun isn’t shining or the wind isn’t blowing”, .

Tesla’s founder, Elon Musk, offered to install the largely untested technology after South Australia suffered a widespread power blackout which shut down Adelaide and the rest of the state in September, 2016.
