Smart and principled and unrelenting. One of the stars of my old listserv, lbo-talk. It was always a treat when he'd depart from denouncing others' deviationism for a reading of Milton or Pound. We met a few times in person and it was my first and still most extreme example of how a real-life personality can differ from online: he was always friendly, gracious, even giggly in real life. Anyway, RIP, Carrol. I'll miss you."
