The Western media is generally reporting last week’s trade discussions between the Chinese leadership and Trump administration as a victory for the US side, but David Goldman of the Asia Times shows why “when the dust settles, America and China will have a deal that allows Trump to claim victory and allows China to become the world’s dominant economy.”

Goldman is a shrewd conservative economist and investor who was a youthful self-described Marxist in a bizarre left-wing cult led by Lyndon LaRouche which later turned sharply to the right. The article indicates that, like many recanting leftists, he still views current and past developments through an historical materialist prism.
