<< nteresting. Lefitsh writers & agitators make a lot about how awful temp

work is, but the BLS surveys show about half of contingent workers don't

want noncontingent work, and then there's what James Baird says here. Is

the problem with temp work its tempness or the lack of benefits?

I think the problem with temp work is the lack of bennies. In Sweden and a few other Scandanavian countries the unions have been getting bennies for part timers and temps. Even in the USA, a lot of building trades which work out of union halls have bennies and few of their workers spend more than 6-9 months on one jobs, hence could be termed tempies as well. Manpower, Inc. is the largest employer in the USA and there is absolutely no reason they couldn't provide bennies for their employees -- they have just never been forced to. I have a couple of friends who swear by temp work, they make more cash (even clerical work wise) and they can basically walk off the job any time they want. maggie coleman mscoleman at aol.com
