Oh, I think he's talking about me: you know, the guy who proved he was a neoconfederate sympathizer by having the audacity to question the north's motives in the Civil War. I've no desire to reopen that debate, but in that vein I would like to bring people's attention to an excellent book I've been reading: a biography of William Lloyd Garrison called All on Fire, by Henry Mayer.
Garrison, who advocated up until the war the North's seccesion from the South (the motto on his paper, "The Liberator", was "No union with slaveholders"), is a fascinating character. His uncompromising radicalism, as well as his condemnation of the racism of those in the abolitionist movement, is inspirational. Mayer captures the tone of the times brilliantly, and the book is almost impossibel to put down. I highly reccommend it.
