I learned to "question the north's motives" (to put it mildly) before I entered high school.
On this list people conflated the commonplace observation that the North had sectional economic interests (and had no intention of freeing slaves, but only preserving the union) with arguments that Southern seccession would have been a Good Thing overall. We had a rather exotic excursion into Harry Turtledove Land.
A few crumudgeons made fools of the sophisticates, and I snickered immoderately from the shadows.
