In the mid-1970s, the Dining Car Employees union hall in Oakland was still
on 7th Street in Oakland, across from the huge Post Office complex which had
destroyed much of the commercial center of West Oakland. Delegates
deadheaded on passenger trains rather than having an overblown travel
allowance as in many unions.
