Briefly put, she's a ecofeminist reactionary much admired by some critics
of development in the US. She does a lot of stuff on women's unique
ability to nurture, and greatly admires traditional ways of organizing
societies, despite their patriarchal, and eiltist tendencies. She's from
india, so people in the States think she's "authentic." She is derided in
the Indian press as being a "Delhi intellectual" who thinks she
understands rural India. She's the Indian version of those awful white
middle class environmentalists who drone on and on about Native American
environmental values while driving an SUV, paying $7.99/lb for free
range chicken breast, going for colonic hydrotherapy and getting
rebirthed.
