I'd recommend Gary Wills, "Under God:  Religion and Politics in
America."  It's not a comprehensive history, but it is very easy and
interesting reading.

I'd like to know of a good comprehensive history myself, not of
religion in general (I know the jewish part), but of Christianity
in particular.
