I broke the addiction to democrats when it was easy to do so, in the mid-sixties (I had voted straight democrat from 1952 through 64). Probably there ought to be a 12-step program for "Democrats who know better but can't kick the habit." It really feels wonderful once you get rid of that compulsion to vote, and prepares you to look others in the eye and say with glee: "I handed in a blank ballot." (Useful to tweak the noses of those who explain "non-voting" as being laziness or "apathy.")
