I have read two good books which address this subject. First is Edward N. Luttwak "The Endangered American Dream" (1993, Toutchstone ed.) especially pages 165-175. Luttwak is a well-known right-wing warmonger but he addressed this subject before it was widely recognized on the left. Incidentally, he lost face with his Pentagon buddies when he appeared on CNN during the Gulf War and loudly predicted 10,000 Allied causalties would occur during the ground invasion of Iraq.
