I wonder about your timing here. My impression is that the DP had roots in the urban masses, such as they were, well before the turn of the century. The Republicans were the party of big Eastern capital and gave the Irish, for one group, a reason to join a different party. There were also of course the urban draft riots in the North in the Civil War period.
