I know that from many o the list Nicaragua has been or is important. I'm in touch with some friends there regarding the recent disaster. Here's a note of interest:

--------

Tom,

It's horrifying, both in the sheer magnitude of the disaster (now 4,000 dead; 7,000 disappeared, nearly a million homeless...and pobre Honduras esta peor!)...but also this government has outdone itself in arrogance, incompetence and general inhumanity. Many of the dead, when it's all said and done, will be lain directly at their doorstep. Think Somoza 1972 [when an earthquake leveled Managua], and then realize that as many friends have told me, this is MUCH worse... Truly escalofriante [horrifying].

--------

This correspondent also sent a note on a USAID worker expelled from Nicaragua for recommending that aid only be channnled through NGOs. The government apprently intercepted her email, and there found her call to avoid government channels.
