I think that Jon Foster's book is a good starting place. It's written for a general audience, yet it is pretty sophisticated. Then Harvey would be a good follow-up, especially since Foster and Harvey have had some disagreements, some of which were thrashed out in a recent Monthly Review. Also, Louis Harvey has taken Harvey to task over several issues in a forthcoming issue of the Rev. of Radical Political Economics.
