Whether they would do same had they been in power is beyond, what I do know is that I it was a rare woman in academia who *wasn't* an ardent and punitive defender of the hoop jumping status quo. And, feminists were sometimes the worst defenders of the rituals maintaining that status quo, That's of course been my experience, though I do have enough acquaintances to know that my exp. isn't singular and there are enough articles and conferences about the problem to convince me that it is, indeed, a problem. Of course, then you have the always entertaining I'm a feminist/you're not debate that takes place within the ranks of those who identify with this embattled academic discipline and political movement. I dunno, I think women are perfectly capable of come up with such a system. Because, hey, Paula, it was a feminist (a woman I dearly love to this day) who asked me in my pre grad school interview if I understood that grad school was serious business and certainly not for former housewives who might be just dabbling in education. She is now my bestest friend, a mentor, colleague and I admire her dearly. Nonetheless.....
