Re Jim's: "Listening to the spin put on the news about Pinochet's arrest in London, it seems as if the British government is preparing public opinion for a climbdown on extradition. No clear statement to that effect, but a deafening silence from Labour's front bench is being interpreted as a lack of will to see the thing through."

Yes, it would seem that Baroness Thatcher's tea companion will be going home, after all. Following is from today's Guardian:

Straw signals Chile deal Pinochet may be sent home after Carey plea for mercy

By Ewen MacAskill, David Pallister and Ian Black Friday October 23, 1998

The Home Secretary, Jack Straw, hinted yesterday that the former Chilean dictator, General Augusto Pinochet, could be sent home on compassionate grounds after a plea by the Archbishop of Canterbury for a Christian approach.

The signal from the Government came as a legal challenge to his arrest was adjourned until Monday amid growing controversy over his detention.

Baroness Thatcher's call for him to be allowed to return home brought condemnation from the Foreign Secretary, Robin Cook, Labour back-benchers and the Liberal Democrats and an ambivalent response from the Conservatives.
