For American schools located near bodies of fresh water, it is the norm. They are for the most part staffed by people who got their Ph.D.'s at the University of Chicago, or people who got their Ph.D.'s at places where professors who got their Ph.D.'s at the University of Chicago were dominant.

American schools located near salt water tend to be staffed more by people from other places, and to be less sympathetic to the Chicago School.

Of course, many people would think that I have just succumbed to the narcissism of small differences--like expounding at length on the profound and deep differences between the Serbian and the Croatian languages.
