sorry. my question was not whether there was a thing called competition, nor even that some markets are more competitive than yesteryear, but about narrative emphasis--monopoly is perfectly consistent with competition, under certain circumstances; but it isn't the same as it. and saying that "the economy as a whole constitutes a field of natural selection" (brenner, 10) seems to mystify this relationship. monopolies are made as competition is--not by the self regulation of the market, etc, but by the conditions that allow for turning advantage into capital and capital into power. narratives of primitive accumulation come to mind here, as does richard goldstien's argument in the -voice- that displacing sex businesses and porn shops in new york have everything to do with real estate values rather than the "morality" of porn. etc.
