Germany and the Third Way

The New York Times, August 2, 1999:

>Schröder, after some hesitation, has decided to take the Social Democrats
>sharply toward the right, but over the past few days it has become clear
>that he has not brought all the party with him. Rather, resistance is
>mounting.

I think this article could be helpful for clarification: Schroederisierung oder die Zukunft der Sozialdemokratie (published in the April 99 issue of Sozialismus), still online at http://www.sozialismus.de/99.04/blair.htm

It is a background analysis of Lafontaine's political defeat and the "Schroederization" of the SPD, which is not at all a new development.

>Six weeks ago, Schröder and Blair published a joint paper in which they
>attempted to map out the essence of the Third Way -- a Clintonian updating
>of Social Democratic values that attempts to place political movements
>formerly regarded as of the left firmly in the center of the political
>spectrum of modern societies.

For a detailed background critique see the article "Sozialdemokratie und Neoliberalismus" in the current issue of Sozialismus - online at http://www.sozialismus.de/99.07/bischoff.htm or http://www.sozialismus.de/ --

And most recently another view: a programmatic paper by the chairman of the PDS Bundestag Parliamentary Party published today:

Gerechtigkeit ist modern. Eine notwendige Antwort auf Gerhard Schroeder und Tony Blair Gregor Gysi: Zwoelf Thesen für eine Politik des modernen Sozialismus
