I should have added that the tradition of funding US academic posts for
only nine months of the year, expecting the academic who wishes to carry
research out in the summer to raise research funds to meet the remaining
three months of salary, explicitly encourages the entrepreneurial academic.
It is true that elite universities often do defray much of research costs
as part of institutional overhead, but still it seems that the relations to
the market are much tighter in the US than in Europe...especially in the
case of biotechnology.
How all this is affecting undergraduate teaching, the nature of research,
the cooperation among scholars seems to be the focus of the
Slaugther/Leslie study which I have not read.
