M$ had very little to do with the initial ~92-95 upsurge; but since M$'s turnaround, the vast, vast majority of newly arrived users use M$ slothware. i'd agree with what i think you were suggesting, that M$ hasn't *caused* much interest in the net--but that's mostly an idle question of prestige, i think.
