There is a very famous book by Carl Schmitt titled _The Crisis of Parliamentary Democracy_. It is probably not what you are looking for since it is a product of Germany at the beginning of this century. You may find it interesting though...

i need to nail down the origins of the phrase "crisis of democracy" for a piece i'm writing on the seattle events. i first read of it in conjunction with the '72 democratic presidential race; had it popped up as a quasi-official buzzword prior to that, to anyone's knowledge?
thanks.
