i'd check out a fellah who teaches about the intellectual/social movement history of the 50s and 60s. there's a link to him at http://www.flash.net/~oudies/theoryD1.htm#bell. that will take you some of daniel bell's work posted on the net and if you click to the homepage, then you'll get his web site. i have a strong suspicion that, in the US, the public discourse would be tied to bell's work on the contradictions of capitalism, as well as irving howe and the New York Intellectuals, the circle that bell traveled in.
