In part, classical political economy was often non-racist, although there is
practitioners were decidedly "racist," in the sense of that they spoke of the
Irish in very degrading terms. Yet the same people often suggested that the
Irish characteristics changed once they got to North America.
The real race for the earlier economists was the working-class. For example,
Adam Smith refers to "the race of labourers" in the Wealth of Nations.
