Loathsome though she is, her book on the motivations of the early
British welfare pioneers is very good. She digs up loads of great stuff
about how the Fabians were galvanised by fantastic visions of an
underclass sinking into moral depravity. The sources she digs up ranting
on about the racial degeneration of the residuum have to be seen to be
believed.
