An interesting but very difficult interpretation of Weber's
Agrarian Sociology of Ancient Civilizations is Lawrence Krader's in
Dialectic of Civil Society (Amsterdam: Van Grocum, Assen, 1976). He argues
that the controversy between Weber and others was spurious as the
controversialists tried to determine whether human nature is in essence
individualist or communist, while Krader argues that their efforts were in
vain as there is no human essence.
