Brazil, what's the toll of high interest rates?

Does any LBOer have any direct knowledge of the impact punitive interest
rates are having on Brazil?  There is a front-page article in the Wall
Street Journal today that gives some idea of the terrific toll these
rates are having on average Brazilians.  If even the WSJ is depicting
the situation there as grim, it would be very interesting to hear what
some witness on this list has to say about the social costs of Brazil's
anti-speculation drive.
